Scholastic Aptitude Test and Scholastic Assessment Test
The SAT Reasoning Test, formerly known as the Scholastic Aptitude Test and Scholastic Assessment Test, is a standardized exam widely used for undergraduate college admissions in the United States. It is owned, published, and developed by the College Board, a non-profit organization in the US, and was initially developed, published, and scored by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), which now administers the exam. The SAT comprises the general SAT Reasoning Test and the SAT Subject Test.
The SAT Reasoning Test is a comprehensive, three-hour and 45-minute assessment that evaluates skills in three key areas: Critical Reading, Math, and Writing. While most questions are multiple-choice, the test also includes a 25-minute essay that requires students to demonstrate their writing proficiency. The SAT assesses critical thinking skills necessary for academic success in college — skills that students typically acquire throughout their high school years.
The SAT is generally taken by high school juniors and seniors and serves as an indicator of how effectively students apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired both inside and outside the classroom. It also acts as a predictive tool for colleges to assess potential academic performance at the undergraduate level.
Each section of the SAT is scored on a scale of 200-800, including two writing sub-scores: one for multiple-choice questions and another for the essay. The test consists of 10 sections, structured as follows:
First Section: 25-minute essay
Last Section: 10-minute multiple-choice writing section
Sections 2-7: 25-minute sections
Sections 8-9: 20-minute sections
Test takers may receive different test booklets with varied content orders for sections two through nine, covering mathematics, critical reading, and writing.
The SAT Subject Tests are one-hour, primarily multiple-choice assessments focusing on specific subjects such as English, History, Mathematics, Science, and Foreign Languages. These tests measure a student’s knowledge in particular subject areas and their ability to apply that knowledge effectively.
Colleges use the SAT Subject Tests for admission, course placement, and academic advising. When combined with other academic records (such as high school transcripts, other test scores, and teacher recommendations), these tests provide a reliable measure of a student’s academic achievement and serve as a strong predictor of future performance in college-level courses.
