The University of Eastern Finland (UEF) is one of Finland’s largest and most dynamic universities, known for its strong focus on interdisciplinary research, global education, and regional development. Established in 2010 through the merger of two well-established institutions—the University of Joensuu and the University of Kuopio—UEF operates on two main campuses located in the cities of Joensuu and Kuopio in eastern Finland.

The university serves a student population of over 16,000 and employs approximately 3,200 academic and administrative staff. It is organized into four faculties: the Philosophical Faculty, the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology, the Faculty of Health Sciences, and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies. This diverse academic structure allows the university to offer more than 100 major subject areas and degree programs across a broad range of disciplines.

UEF is recognized for its strengths in health sciences, environmental research, education, natural resources, and social sciences. Its interdisciplinary research tackles major global challenges such as climate change, aging populations, biodiversity loss, digital transformation, and sustainable development. Students are encouraged to participate in research-led learning, internships, and collaborative projects with public institutions and private industry.

Many of the university’s master's and doctoral programs are offered in English, making UEF a popular destination for international students from more than 100 countries. Programs emphasize hands-on learning, critical thinking, and innovation. The university actively participates in international exchange and research networks, and offers students excellent mobility and dual-degree opportunities with partner universities worldwide.

Student life at UEF is vibrant and inclusive. Both the Joensuu and Kuopio campuses offer state-of-the-art facilities, including libraries, science and tech labs, simulation centers, botanical gardens, and modern student housing. Support services cover everything from academic guidance and language training to mental health counseling and career development. Active student unions and clubs provide rich cultural, social, and recreational experiences that enhance campus life.

The University of Eastern Finland is committed to advancing science, promoting sustainable development, and preparing students to become globally engaged professionals and researchers.
