TOEFL

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a globally recognized and widely accepted standardized test designed to evaluate the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. Administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the TOEFL test plays a crucial role for individuals seeking admission to English-speaking universities, colleges, and institutions around the world. Comprising four sections—Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing—the TOEFL test provides a comprehensive assessment of an individual's ability to understand and use English in academic settings. The Reading section evaluates comprehension skills through passages from academic texts, while the Listening section assesses the ability to understand spoken English in various academic contexts. The Speaking section involves expressing opinions and ideas on familiar topics, and the Writing section requires the formulation of well-structured responses. TOEFL scores are widely used by academic institutions as part of the admissions process, and a high score on the TOEFL test is often a prerequisite for international students aspiring to pursue higher education in English-speaking countries. The TOEFL test has evolved to adapt to the changing landscape of language assessment, incorporating internet-based testing (iBT) that allows test-takers to complete the exam online. Renowned for its accuracy and reliability, the TOEFL test continues to serve as a vital tool in assessing English language proficiency and facilitating academic success for individuals pursuing educational opportunities in an English-language environment.

Types of ETS TOEFL Exam

The ETS TOEFL conducts the English proficiency exam in two modes. i.e.) Internet based exam (TOEFL iBT) and paper delivered exam (TOEFL PBT).

1. ETS TOEFL – iBT Test

The TOEFL-iBT test is the most preferred type, with over 90% of students attempting the test in this internet-based format. The TOEFL-iBT test comprises 4 sections, which are: speaking, listening, writing and reading. Students are asked to take up all the sections on a computer equipped with a microphone and camera.

2. ETS TOEFL – PBT (* PBT is not available in Nepal)

The TOEFL PBT is a paper-based English language test. Students who are not in proximity to internet-based test centers can take up this test. The TOEFL PBT test format is quite different from that of iBT as it also contains a separate essay section. The listening section in the PBT has recordings that are shorter than the IBT’s.
